The final week of the 2019 season saw the championship come down to two matches. The Lannisters could claim the title with a win or tie over the Thunderwolves. The Possums still had hope and could win with a victory over the Legion and a Lannisters’ loss. Third place also hung in the balance with the Armadillos looking to pass the Legion with a victory over the Lasershow.
It was fitting that the season came down to a final weekend with the title on the line between the Possums and Lannisters. Last year, the two teams would have shared the title if not for Craig Kimbrel’s remarkable non-save, three-strikeout outing that delivered the title to the Armadillos. Both teams had a chance to vanquish the ghost of last year and finish a year-long mission to reclaim the title.
In the end, the Lannisters were able to defeat the Thunderwolves and seize the championship. The Possums did what they needed to do and defeated the Legion, but again fell just a hair short of claiming the ultimate prize. The Armadillos defeated the Lasershow to claim third place after the Legion’s loss to the Possums. After a season of improved play, Sean’s team (like many others) felt the fatigue of the season. This was evident in the PhoeGnomes / Goofballs battle that ended in a 4-4-2 tie.
For the Possums to win the title, they needed to beat the Legion. They were able to accomplish this goal despite some shaky hitting and a few pitching struggles. Charlie Blackmon had two home runs and Shin-Soo Choo added two steals. This was enough to win OBP and tie steals. Chris had the edge on offense thanks to a huge week from Trea Turner (three home runs, one steal) and Jose Ramirez (three home runs, eight RBI).

The Possums had better pitching thanks to great pitching from Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. The pair combined for 22 strikeouts in 12.0 IP. The Legion failed to win any pitching categories with the exception of saves. The end result was a microcosm of both teams’ seasons. The Legion dominated on offense. They led the league for the season in home runs and OBP. They were second (just behind the Goofballs) in SLG. However, their pitching continued to be a problem and the team couldn’t get reliable innings. This led to a series of defeats against the Possums and Lannisters, the two teams with the league’s best and most consistent pitching. The Possums led the league in strikeouts for the year and were near the top in all other pitching categories. This consistency allowed the team to compete for the title all season, and almost take home the trophy.
The Possums’ victory meant that the Lannisters needed to win or tie against the Thunderwolves to win the championship. They were able to deliver a clutch performance in the season’s final week and claim the Dirt Mountain League’s top prize. They did it with a combination of timely hitting and dominant pitching. On offense, the team led the league for the week in OBP and SLG and were second in RBI and home runs. Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, and Matt Chapman each had two home runs and totaled 13 RBI. Trey Mancini added a grand slam, and role players like Tommy Edman contributed as well.
On pitching, Gerrit Cole was dominant again and struck out 14 in just 7.0 IP. Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 in his final start, and Kenley Jansen added two saves. The Thunderwolves did their best to keep the week close and started out hot with a two home run game from Jorge Alfaro. They also enjoyed spectacular starts from Zack Greinke, Chase Anderson, and Lance Lynn. However, the team couldn’t match the volume of the Lannisters’ pitching output and a desperation start from Adam Plutko turned sour and sealed the win for the Lannisters. The Thunderwolves gave everything they had to try to pull the upset, but the Lannisters wouldn’t be denied.

Although this season did not come down to the final day, the end result was in fact determined by one pitching matchup. If the Possums had defeated the Lannisters in Week 22, and all other results stayed the same, they would have won the title by ½ a game. That week came down to a Sunday pitching battle that decided two categories which determined the outcome of the week. The Lannisters won ERA and WHIP by small margins and won 5-3-2. The Possums could have won by the same score with tiny adjustments to the week’s pitching totals. On that Sunday, Gerrit Cole started for the Lannisters versus Max Scherzer for the Possums. Scherzer was excellent with 6.0 IP, one earned run, nine strikeouts, and just two hits and walks. However, Cole was slightly better with 8.0 IP, 15 strikeouts, one earned run, and just one hit. This was enough for the Lannisters to win the week and, indirectly, the title. Cole’s dominant presence throughout the season made him the team’s unquestionable MVP and the only reason the title wasn’t decided among the Possums, Legion, and Armadillos.

The win erases the disappointment from last season for the Lannisters, who claimed their fifth title since 2013. There are currently five players on the Lannisters’ roster who were also present on the 2013 title winner: Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Stephen Strasburg, and Kenley Jansen. These five players have formed a remarkable core for the title winners. The team has endured challenges from all sides over the last seven years and have found a way to compete despite drafting at the bottom nearly every season.
The Armadillos were able to end their season with a strong victory and capture third place. The team led the league in home runs and RBI for the week, and posted the best ERA, WHIP, and quality start numbers as well. Alex Bregman had two home runs and seven walks along with three home runs from Pete Alonso and Jorge Soler. No pitcher allowed more than two earned runs for the week and Jack Flaherty ended the year with an 11 strikeout start. The Armadillos were able to leapfrog the Legion and claim the bronze medal for the season. The finish is impressive considering the team’s injury problems. The championship follow-up saw the losses of Giancarlo Stanton, Gary Sanchez, and others. The strong finish is attributable to solid depth and talent up and down the roster.
Despite the Lannisters’ strength, the 2019 season proved to be the most competitive to date. Seven teams were in contention into the last third of the season. Two of the Lannisters’ losses this year were to the Lasershow. The league’s top teams including the Armadillos, Possums, and Legion, were all in contention with just three weeks left to play. Either the Legion or Possums could have won the title with just a little bit more luck.

Lower-ranked teams like the Lasershow and Thunderwolves continued to make strides and progress with the addition of strong young players. Sean was near the top of the league in SLG despite a lack of home runs. If he can find more power, the team could be a more consistent week-to-week threat. The Thunderwolves tied for the league lead in saves and posted good pitching overall. If the PhoeGnomes showed more consistency, they could easily contend with the other top-tier teams.
With so many teams in contention, the 2020 season should be outstanding. Thank you for being part of the league this year. Now it’s time to begin the offseason, where every team can start to build for the future and to pursue the title next year!
The week’s most important matchup paired the Lannisters and Legion. If the Lannisters won, they would continue to lead the league, control their own fate, and eliminate the Legion. If the Legion won, they would take the lead going into a huge matchup with the Possums. The Lannisters were able to earn the win with a strong all-around performance that was the best in the league. The team led the league in home runs, RBI, OBP, and SLG. They were second in ERA, WHIP, and quality starts. On offense, three players led the way. Nelson Cruz had three home runs and nine RBI. Trey Mancini had two home runs and 10 RBI. Eloy Jimenez had two home runs and six RBI in part-time duty. Bryce Harper mirrored these stats. The Legion had good home run totals, but failed to gain much traction for the week.

The Legion had a few bright spots on pitching like Yu Darvish, but the team failed to find sustained success. The Lannisters got good starts from Stephen Strasburg, Luis Castillo, and Jacob deGrom. Gerrit Cole again led the way with a ten-strikeout performance which gave him over 300 total for the season. These performances allowed the Lannisters to dominate both offense and defense and win the week. The Legion fought to the bitter end, but came up just short in the 2019 season. They will now play for third place in their next match. The Lannisters control their own fate, which will be discussed after the Possums / PhoeGnomes report.
After the Lannisters’ victory, the Possums had to win to keep their title hopes alive. The PhoeGnomes were able to push them to the limit, but Rick managed to survive and stay in the race. Both teams posted strong offensive stats and were near the top of the league in all categories. Ten different Possums’ players had at least one home run. Jonathan Villar was the best of the group with two home runs and three steals. Ronald Acuna stayed hot with two home runs of his own. The PhoeGnomes had a great week from George Springer who had three home runs and five RBI. Brandon Nimmo also had three home runs. The PhoeGnomes didn’t have the consistent home run power that the Possums showed, but did managed to win SLG while the Possums took all four other categories.
The PhoeGnomes were strong on pitching and won three categories. Mike Foltynewicz had a great start, as did Mike Clevinger. However, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Yarbrough successful outings. This gave the Possums a small window to capture WHIP. Despite a bad outing for Trevor Bauer, Justin Verlander and Charlie Morton did enough to capture strikeouts. The disastrous Yarbrough start allowed the Possums to keep control of WHIP and thus win the week. The PhoeGnomes put up a solid effort and almost upset a top team for the second week in a row.
The win keeps the Possums’ hopes alive. After all of the playoff discussion last week, there are now only two matches that matter. The Lannisters will win the title if they defeat or tie the Thunderwolves. The Possums can win the title only if they win and the Lannisters lose. The Lannisters hold a 3-1 tiebreaker edge over the Possums, so any tie scenarios will not matter. The Possums face the Legion, who will be looking to play spoiler after a disappointing loss to the Lannisters. The Thunderwolves are sure to put up a strong fight as well. The final week of the season often has unpredictable lineups and pitching matchups, so anything can still happen.
While the Lasershow and Goofballs are both out of contention, Sean put up yet another outstanding week of stats to earn another victory. They posted the best pitching stats in the league and had nice offensive numbers as well. Eduardo Rodriguez had a great 10 strikeout start for the Lasershow and Marco Gonzalez and Zack Wheeler were also quite good. The offense enjoyed huge weeks from Jeff McNeil and Mitch Moreland. Each player had three home runs. Yuli Gurriel and Willie Calhoun each added two more. This was enough to overcome the Goofballs, who suffered a familiar series of pitching meltdowns that ultimately doomed the team. The win continues to show the progress the Lasershow have made this season.
The week’s final match saw the Armadillos continue to push for third place by defeating the Thunderwolves. Larry’s team posted a strong all-around week. Alex Bregman had three home runs, as did Pete Alonso. Mark Canha added two more, and the team had eight total players contribute at least one home run. The Thunderwolves had six players with home runs, but failed to gain a lot of traction despite starting a lot of different players and trying different matchups. Kyle tried to rotate in players to get favorable match-ups but came up a little short. On pitching, James Paxton had a great start, but the rest of the team was more mediocre. Lance Lynn didn’t have a great ERA or WHIP, but did contribute a monster 20 strikeouts in two starts. The Armadillo shad better all-around numbers including a strong start from Patrick Corbin and a nice week from Alex Colome. This was enough to earn the win for the week and stay in the third place hunt.
Two matches dominate. The most interesting is the Possums / Legion battle. Chris needs to win to hold on to third place, while the Possums must win to have any chance of claiming the title. The Lannisters play the Thunderwolves, and need to tie or win to clinch the title. They will also win the title with a Possums loss or tie, regardless of their outcome with the Thunderwolves. The Armadillos want to win third place, and face the Lasershow, who have proven to be a challenge especially late in the season. Finally, the Goofballs and PhoeGnomes meet in a final match.
With three weeks left every match is of critical importance. The PhoeGnomes kept the race close by defeating the league leaders with a dominant offensive showing. Heather led the league in home runs, RBI, and SLG behind a monster week from Matt Olson. He had five home runs and 10 RBI. George Springer added four home runs and Jose Altuve had three. The Lannisters failed to be competitive on offense but executed a successful all-steals strategy and won the category.
The Lannisters had the best pitching in the league but couldn’t build the counting stats they needed for a tie. Going into Sunday, the PhoeGnomes sat all their pitchers so the Lannisters had a chance to tie with a clean save. However, Kenley Jansen was brought in inexplicably in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game on the road. He pitched a clean inning and flipped WHIP, but did not get the save. Heather earned the narrow 5-4-1 victory.
The Legion had the second best week in the league behind the PhoeGnomes and closed the gap with a win over the Armadillos. Kris Bryant led the way for the Legion with five home runs and 13 RBI plus a steal. Nolan Arenado added three home runs and eight RBI. Six players had steals. The Armadillos failed to mount a challenge on offense and the team’s pitching couldn’t do enough to force a tie despite a solid six quality starts. The Legion rode a great 14 strikeout week from Yu Darvish to earn the win and pull to within 0.5 games of the lead.
The Possums also gained a game on the Lannisters after taking care of business against the Goofballs. The Possums were not a dominant as the Legion, but they did enough to earn a win. Ronald Acuna continued his quest for a 40/40 season with two home runs and two steals. Justin Verlander had a good start along with Trevor Bauer. The Goofballs were good on offense but the pitching again struggled. Rick costed to a stable win.
The Thunderwolves improved their record to 0.500 with a solid win against the hot Lasershow. Neither team posted good offensive numbers but Kyle did enough to take three categories. He was much better on pitching and fell just behind the Lannisters and PhoeGnomes in terms of overall performance. Zack Greinke had two quality starts and 12 strikeouts to set the pace.
Week 24 has two matches that help decide the title. Right now the Legion and Possums are both 0.5 games behind the Lannisters. The Lannisters own a 3-1 tiebreaker edge over the Possums and a 2-1 advantage over the Legion. The Legion tiebreaker could change depending on the outcome of Week 24. To increase the pressure further, the Possums and Legion will face each other in the final week.
There are dozens of possibilities, each depending on the outcome of the Lannisters / Legion match. The Possums face the PhoeGnomes. The other four teams will not factor into the race this week since they play each other and the Armadillos were eliminated from contention. The face the Thunderwolves while the Goofballs meet the Lasershow.
There are three scenarios that can happen in the Lannisters / Legion match:
A Lannisters victory produces the fewest possible outcomes. If the Lannisters win, the Legion are eliminated. The Possums can then only win the title if they win in both Week 24 and Week 25 and the Lannisters lose in Week 25. All other scenarios produce outright wins or ties that the Lannisters will win via the 3-1 head-to-head tiebreaker advantage.

If the Lannisters and Legion tie, then there are numerous possible scenarios in Week 25 depending on the outcome of the Possums / PhoeGnomes. The Lannisters will hold a tiebreaker over both teams (3-1 versus the Possums, 2.5-1.5 over the Legion).
Lannisters / Legion Tie & Possums Win
This situation produces the most possible victory conditions for the Possums. They control their own destiny and win the title with a win over the Legion. They also win the title with a tie against the Legion and a Lannister loss to the Thunderwolves. The Legion win the title with a victory over the Possums unless the Lannisters also win (in which case Jeff wins the title). The Lannisters also clinch the title with a win and Possums / Legion tie.

Lannisters / Legion Tie & Possums Lose
If the Possums lose, they are eliminated from contention. The Lannisters win the title unless they lose in Week 25 since they hold the tiebreaker over the Legion 2.5 – 1.5.

Lannisters / Legion Tie & Possums Tie
In this scenario, the standings are the same as they are now with the Lannisters holding a 0.5 game lead over both teams. The clinch a victory win a win or tie since they hold both tiebreakers. The Legion can win the title with a win and Lannister loss. The same applies for the Possums. If the Lannisters lose and the Legion and Possums tie, all three teams will be tied. The Lannisters win since they hold both tiebreakers, and the Possums hold the tiebreaker over the Legion.

If the Legion defeat the Lannisters, every team has a chance for the title and some bizarre scenarios emerge depending on the outcome of the Legion / Possums battle.
Legion win & Possums Win
This is the cleanest scenario. The winner of the Possums / Legion match wins the title. If these two teams tie, the Lannisters win with a victory over Kyle thanks to a tiebreaker. If the Lannisters lose or tie and the Possums and Legion tie, Rick wins the title thanks to the 2.5-1.5 tiebreaker over the Legion.

Legion win & Possums Tie
Chris has the advantage if the Possums lose and he wins Week 24. He wins the title with a victory over the Possums or a tie if the Lannisters lose or tie. Rick wins the title if he wins and Jeff loses or ties Kyle. Finally, if the Possums and Legion tie and the Lannisters win, the Legion and Lannisters will share the title because the tiebreaker would be even at 2-2.

Legion win & Possums lose
If the Possums lose and the Legion win, Chris clinches the title with a Week 25 victory or tie if the Lannisters also lose or tie. Rick can only win the title with a victory and Lannister loss. The Lannisters can win the title with a win and Possums victory. If the Lannisters win and the Possums and Legion tie, Jeff again shares the title with Chris thanks to the 2-2 tiebreaker.
The most shocking scenario happens if the Legion win and Possums lose in Week 24, then the Possums and Lannisters win in Week 25. This leaves a three way tie at the top of the standings. It is also unresolvable! Rick would hold the tiebreaker over the Legion 3-1. Jeff would hold the tiebreaker over Rick at 3-1. However, the Lannisters and Legion would be tied 2-2. In this case, it is impossible to resolve the tie (unlike the other three-way tie earlier where Jeff won each match, and Rick also defeated the Legion). The three teams would share the championship in this apocalyptic scenario.

As you can see, anything can still happen depending on the outcome of this week’s matches. The Lannisters could clinch the title outright or fall into a deep hole. The Legion must at least tie or be eliminated. The Possums can’t afford to lose and need to position themselves before the final week.
The week’s biggest match featured the Possums and Lannisters. Rick could move into first place with a win whereas the Lannisters could consolidate their lead. Neither team was able to put together a standout performance but the Lannisters did just enough to earn a victory. Each team struggled to get into an offensive rhythm relative to the rest of the league. The Lannisters suffered a series of injuries to four of their starting nine position players. Mookie Betts and Mike Trout each had two home runs but the star for the week was Austin Meadows. He had three home runs and two steals. This was enough for the Lannisters to win home runs and tie steals. The Possums were able to three categories. They won RBI thanks to a great week from Josh Donaldson. He had three home runs and eight RBI. The Possums had good power up and down the lineup and won the rate categories with ease. This gave the Possums a slime 3-1-1 lead.

The teams were evenly matched in pitching. Justin Verlander had a great start for the Possums and Charlie Morton had 10 strikeouts in 6.0 IP. Walker Buehler had a poor outing for the Lannisters, but Jake Odorizzi picked up the slack with 17 strikeouts in 10.1 IP. The Lannisters easily led the league in strikeouts and also had a rebound to win saves. However, the quality starts totals were tied going into Sunday and both ERA and WHIP were too close to call. The Possums called on Max Scherzer and he responded with a great start in which he allowed one earned run, two walks, and two hits over 6.0 IP. The Lannisters countered with Gerrit Cole later in the day. He responded with 8.0 IP, one hit, no walks, and 15 strikeouts. It was Cole’s sixth straight start with at least 10 strikeouts. The effort was enough to earn a quality start and swing both rate categories to the Lannisters. This was enough for a win for the week. The Possums fell to 1.5 games behind the leaders and now have no way to win a tie-breaker. The Lannisters’ win, paired with the Possums’ and Legion’s losses, give them a 1.5 game lead with three weeks left. The Lannisters can secure the title with two wins or a win and a tie if the tie comes against the Legion.
The Lasershow put up the best numbers in the league and stunned the Legion. Sean posted the best all-around numbers in the league and would have beaten any team for the week. They led the league in steals, SLG, quality starts, ERA, and WHIP. On offense, Francisco Lindor led the way. He had three home runs and two steals. Willie Calhoun had two home runs, and Jeff McNeil added two more plus eight RBI. The team’s lowest SLG for any player with more than 10 Abs was Yasiel Puig at 0.440. This kind of up-and-down the line-up production was enough to easily dominate the rate stats. The Legion had a great four home run week from Yasmani Grandal and won the category, but carried a 1-4 deficit into pitching.

The Lasershow were even more impressive on the mound. Mike Minor allowed just two earned runs in 15.1 IP. No other pitched allowed more than a single earned run for the week. Eduardo Rodriguez and Max Fried didn’t allow a run and struck out 17 in 14.0 IP. The Legion had more strikeouts and saves thanks to Noah Syndergaard and Mike Soroka, but both pitchers allowed a lot of runs. This gave Chris one category plus saves, but Sean was well ahead in the other three. This was enough to earn the shocking upset. The Legion fall to 1.5 games behind the Lannisters and cannot win a tie-breaker.
The Armadillos kept their championship hopes alive with a strong win over the PhoeGnomes. The Armadillos posted the best all-around week outside of the Lasershow. They led the league in home runs and were second in many categories including strikeouts, ERA, WHIP, quality starts, and RBI. The pitching staff was especially strong. Patrick Corbin had strong start but the biggest star was Jack Flaherty. He had two quality starts, didn’t allow an earned run, and struck out 18 over 16.0 IP. Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantara struck out 16 in two starts and also did not allow a run between them. These performances created an almost insurmountable lead for the PhoeGnomes to try to overcome. The Armadillos swept all five categories.
On offense, the star for the week was the red-hot Jorge Soler. He had three home runs and a steal. Five other Armadillos players had two home runs each, including Gary Sanchez and Bo Bichette in part-time duty. Alex Bregman had a 0.519 OBP with two home runs, six RBI, and a steal. The PhoeGnomes managed to win OBP thanks go a good week from Paul Goldschmidt. However, the rest of the team was fairly cold and only Paul DeJong had more than one home run. This led to a massive 9-1 win for the Armadillos, who are now two games behind the league leaders.
The week’s final match saw the Thunderwolves upset the Goofballs. Both teams had decent numbers across the board, but the Thunderwolves earned the edge in pitching volume. James Paxton was the star for the week with 12 strikeouts in 7.0 IP. Dakota Hudson also had a quality start, along with a nice effort from Lance Lynn. The Goofballs won saves thanks to a big three save week from Emilio Pagan. However, the starters failed to record a high volume of strikeouts and couldn’t get the rate stats low enough to pay off the low-innings volume strategy. Kyle won four categories and put massive pressure on the Goofballs’ offense.
Kevin tried his best and had an absolutely monster week from Ketel Marte. He had four home runs and 14 RBI. Mitch Garver added there home runs, and Juan Soto totaled two more. This was enough to win RBI and take OBP and SLG as well. However, the team was only able to tie in steals despite three from Adalberto Mondesi. Kyle countered with a big week from J.T. Realmuto who had three home runs and a steal. Three other players had two home runs, and Kyle took the category. This was enough to end the week and spoil the Goofballs’ title hopes.
With just three weeks left to play, there are four teams still in contention. The Lannisters have a 1.5 game lead over two teams, and can control their destiny. If they win two weeks, they win the title outright. There are many other possible scenarios involving the next three teams. The Armadillos must at least tie to stay in the race. They face the Legion, who need a win to keep pace. The Possums play the Goofballs and also need a win to keep pace. Kevin will now have to play spoiler. The Thunderwolves and Lasershow are the week’s final match and both teams have played well recently, so it should be a fun battle.
